50 Years U.K. Subs… The Punk Symbol!
The U.K. Subs are one of the most iconic bands of the British punk scene. They were formed in 1976 in London, at a time when punk was emerging powerfully in the United Kingdom. The founder and central figure of the band is Charlie Harper, known for his energy and long-standing presence on the scene.
The band quickly stood out for its raw, authentic sound and its connection to the working class. In the late ’70s, they achieved success with songs such as “Stranglehold” and “Warhead”, while several of their singles entered the UK charts.
A distinctive feature of their career is their series of albums in alphabetical order (from “Another Kind of Blues” to “Ziezo”), something rare in music history. Despite many lineup changes, the U.K. Subs have continued relentlessly to record and tour for decades, keeping the punk spirit alive.
To this day, they are considered one of the most enduring and influential bands of the genre, with Charlie Harper remaining a symbol of authenticity and dedication to punk.
For 2026, the U.K. Subs lineup celebrating their 50th anniversary is led by vocalist Charlie Harper, along with longtime bassist Alvin Gibbs, drummer Stefan Häublein, and guitarist Marc Carrey (EU shows) or Abe Inglis (UK shows). The band has announced numerous dates, including a 50th-anniversary tour and a show.
The legendary U.K. Subs are returning to Athens on Friday, July 3, 2026, for a historic performance at the An Club stage.
INTERVIEW… with Mr. Charlie Harper!
Athenscalling.gr: I honestly don’t know how to begin our conversation… when I have in front of me a PUNK ICON! Mr. Charlie Harper welcome in Athenscalling.gr.
Charlie Harper: My pleasure !
Athenscalling.gr: Tell me, after so many decades in punk, what is it that still keeps you so creative and full of energy?
Charlie Harper: the scene is still full of energy and as creative as ever, I have time to see more shows now.
Athenscalling.gr: If you could speak to your 1976 self, would you tell him to do anything differently?
Charlie Harper: hypothepical but a real good question, so many times I was pulled off the right path to please other members ego’s. details are in my book ‘Anarchy of Demons’
Athenscalling.gr: I see! Have you ever wondered, over all these years, whether anything in your life has changed?
Charlie Harper: I am a changling, I look, even hunt for change, every sell in my body has changed.
Athenscalling.gr: Speaking of you, I came across online… Charlie Harper’s brilliant book “An Anarchy of Demons”, a book about you… tell us about it.
Charlie Harper: from berth, school days, music fan, musician and beyond, I have missed out very little in 400 plus pages.
Athenscalling.gr: It’s 2026 today—hand on heart, what do you think is the place of punk in society and in the music industry?
Charlie Harper: Hand on heart, we have hardly started, society’s forever for the super rich, people are in a never ending struggle.
Athenscalling.gr: Watching many festivals, we see that there are still quite a few bands following the punk scene today. Does all this reflect the original spirit of punk?
Charlie Harper: To a degree, some are deadly passionate, and others to a less degree but most agree that our leaders do not have the peoples best interest, their aim is control, while we are fed lies, better be quiet or we may get turned back home like in the USA.
Athenscalling.gr: 50 years U.K. Subs, the “poet” wonders… how does that happen?
Charlie Harper: An act of god, well its 50 years of punk rock in England, our 50th is next year, 1977- 2027.
Athenscalling.gr: What about your relationship with the audience today compared to the past… what has changed?
Charlie Harper: Fucking high stages and barriers, we hate them ! a band like the subs are close to our audience high stages and barriers make this hard work, barriers make a different atmostphere, we are not pop or rock stars.
Athenscalling.gr: I’ve always had this curiosity, so just before we wrap up our conversation, I’d like you to travel back in time and remember: what was the first album you ever bought, and what was the first concert you attended as a member of the audience?
Charlie Harper: Almost a big contrediction to the last question but I was just 10 years old, Elvis where he was wearing the gold lame suit on the LP, First show was skiffle band, I was 8 or 9, it was in a hut out side of Forest Row, Sussex
Athenscalling.gr: As we say goodbye and thank you for everything you’ve shared with us… something for the closing—Charlie, what does punk mean to you today? Is it music, a way of life, a message of freedom, an expression of anger at what’s happening today… or something else?
Charlie Harper: All of the above and more, we have a long way to go but I am so proud the punk rockers and the people who won’t exept the status quo, govenments hide so much from us, the truth seekers are lied to.
Athenscalling.gr: Thank you Charlie… all the best to you and to your band.
Charlie Harper: A good chat Theodore, looking forward to see you all at the concert, this show too maybe someones first time.
P.S. I wish all chats would be as good as yours, many thanks.
Charlie Harper.
