NOVA RIOT…Unleashing the Chaos!Three Voices!One Riot!

In an era of predictable formulas and recycled aesthetics, NOVA RIOT emerges from Durant, Oklahoma, as a formidable disruption to the heavy music status quo. Operating under the defiant mantra of “Music with No Apologies,” the trio has rapidly carved out a niche within a self-defined sonic territory they describe as bubblegum alternative metal. This high-octane collision of gritty defiance and polished melodicism positions Nova Riot alongside contemporary heavyweights such as Spiritbox, Bad Omens, and The Pretty Reckless, while maintaining a pop-sensibility reminiscent of Poppy and Violent Vira.

Founded in 2024, Nova Riot is comprised of three distinct creative pillars. Fronting the storm is Nova Ray, whose signature aesthetic and commanding vocal presence signal a total rejection of manufactured artifice in favor of raw, visceral authenticity. Behind the technical machinery are Orion (bass) and Ares (lead guitar). Together, this lineup functions as a self-contained production powerhouse, bypassing traditional industry bottlenecks to deliver a high-end, cinematic experience from the moment of conception.

The band’s strategic ascent is as unconventional as their sound. Eschewing the traditional regional bar circuit, the members—all seasoned industry professionals who have graced premier stages like The Bomb Factory and Canton Hall—opted for a digital-first global strategy. By prioritizing high-impact visual storytelling and studio perfection, including collaborations with veteran drummer Matt Thompson (King Diamond), Nova Riot established a mature brand identity before ever stepping onto a local stage.
Thematically, the music of Nova Riot functions as a series of modern incantations. Their songwriting explores the duality of the human experience, ranging from the escapist storytelling of ”Midnight Coven Crush” to the stark, vulnerable realities of mental health in “Sorry Mom.”
Tracks like ”The Altar” and ”Like I Ment It” further solidify their conceptual depth, utilizing darker, atmospheric textures to explore themes of self-mastery and spiritual alchemy.

Nova Riot does not merely write songs; however, they construct immersive worlds where listeners are invited to reclaim their power and navigate their own destinies. For music fans seeking the next evolution in alternative metal, Nova Riot offers a rare combination of professional pedigree, commercial viability, and an uncompromising creative vision that demands attention.

INTERVIEW… Nova Ray-Vocals!

Athenscalling.gr: Your music blends catchy pop melodies with dark, aggressive metal elements. How do you balance these two contrasting sides of your personality when you write and perform?

Nova Ray-Vocals: My personality has always been split between bubbly and fun and dark and unsettling. So this comes very naturally for me in my performance and my writing. I want it to always be a good blend of good hooks that have just enough grit to evoke real emotions!

Athenscalling.gr: Some of your songs explore toxic relationships, inner struggles, and emotional pain. Is there a particular song that was especially difficult for you to write or perform, and why?

Nova Ray-Vocals: Sorry Mom is probably the most emotional and vulnerable lyrics i have ever written. I wrote it during a dark time in my life and it touches on my struggles with mental health, addictive behavior and self destructive tendencies. The song is about suicide and as much as it pains me to admit it but it’s something I’ve thought about too many times in the past. Now it serves as a reminder that suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem and should never be the answer.

Athenscalling.gr: How much of Nova Ray is the real you, and how much is the character you become when you step on stage?

Nova Ray-Vocals: Nova is the side of myself that i used to be afraid to be. I actually believe she is more the real me than any past version of myself. I’ve always done wild makeup and crazy outfits even as a child. So I’ve always had this personality and aesthetic, i think with Nova i just allow myself to be more the true me all the way to the max.

INTERVIEW… Orion- Bass!

Athenscalling.gr: Your sound combines heavy riffs, electronic textures, and melodic hooks. How do you approach bass lines to make sure they add both weight and groove to the band’s sound?

Orion-Bass: So funny story actually, I’m the rhythm guitarist and primary composer for Nova Riot. When Nova and I launched Nova Riot we had decided that we no longer wanted to compromise on our vision and decided to keep our creative circle super small. Limited to myself as the composer, Nova on lyrics and Ares as the primary producer. The label didn’t really know how to label us since we don’t operate as a normal band so i ended up getting the bassist tag since i did in fact also do the bass for the tracks as well as all the rhythms. The 3 of us did everything in house minus the drums in which we case brought in our friend Matt Thompson, drummer for legendary metal band King Diamond, and a few tracks that we had another friend do some synth or b3 stuff for the record. But to answer your question directly, as I’m composing the bass lines are just there. I try not to double what I’m doing on the guitar but instead find a simple grove for the bass lines to live in. Busy bass lines can sometimes lose the weight they are intended to carry so i subscribe to the kiss method which is “keep it simple stupid” but I don’t spend a whole lot of time on bass. I sit down and write a part for each track, go and lay it down and even sometimes they just happen spur of the moment in the studio but typically speaking i already hear them, in my head.

Athenscalling.gr: When NOVA RIOT writes new music, how does your role as the bassist influence the songwriting process, and how do you collaborate with Ares and Nova Ray?

Orion-Bass: Yeah so like i said in the last question i am the primary composer for Nova Riot. I’ve been writing g original music for close to 25 years now so its second nature to me at this point, but i wanted to do something different when we started Nova Riot, not so different that it stood out as obvious but we set out to create something that felt both familiar and contemporary. But typically I I’ll either start by writing a melody on either a synth or guitar and the start to add others layers and textures. Once i have something that resembles a song i send it to the rest of the group, Ares which sometimes make adjustments to the arrangement and from there Nova puts her stamp on it.

Athenscalling.gr: Which bassist or band has influenced your playing the most, and what is one technique or musical idea you’ve borrowed and made your own?

Orion-Bass: A former bandmate of mine that goes by the name Irish Joe is who I learned most of what i know about a bass from We spent 18 years touring together. I have some amazing bassist friends but i can probably honestly say that most of what i do on the bass is more about what the song needs and less about technique so again I don’t spend a whole lot of time composing the bass. Just keep it simple, find a groove and just let it lift the guitars a bit with the low end while giving the drummer something to play against.

INTERVIEW… Ares- Lead Guitar!

Athenscalling.gr: NOVA RIOT’s sound moves between crushing metal riffs and catchy, almost pop-like melodies. How do you create guitar parts that are both heavy and memorable without losing the band’s identity?

Ares- Lead Guitar: I ll refer to Orion for this!

Orion- The melody always comes first. That’s one thing I’ve really focused on in all my years of composing music. Craft a melody but keep in mind that you want to build into something that has emotional weight. So we figure out what range of emotions we want to go through on any particular composition and if we go from lets say heartbreak to anger then its really easy to build from that melodramatic melody to something darker and heavier.

Athenscalling.gr: Do you approach guitar solos as technical showcases, emotional storytelling, or a combination of both? What do you want listeners to feel when they hear one of your solos?

Ares- Lead Guitar: I come from an ‘80s shredder background and thats what seems to present itself every time i pick up a guitar and write a solo. Being a producer as well keeps me somewhat keyed in on what seems to be more listenable vs a ton of notes that listeners without an extensive musical background can relate to or appreciate. I’ve always tried to look at a solo from the perspective that if you can hum parts of it or all of it, you’ve written something super special and memorable. Jury is still out whether or not i actually hold to those standards when someone else hears my work. Hahaha

Athenscalling.gr: And now One question for the whole band… Greece has a passionate metal community and a long history of embracing dark, theatrical, and extreme music. What do you know about the Greek metal scene, and if you had the chance to perform in Greece, what would you most look forward to experiencing about the Greek fans and culture?

Nova Ray-Vocals: The connection to Greece runs Deep for me. Im. Devotee to the goddess Aphrodite, She has her own altar at home, So Greek mythology and sprinting are a constant daily for me especially when it comes to my art. What i love about the Greek metal community is how deeply they embrace the theatrical, dark romantic and tragic aspects of storytelling! There something magical about the raw emotional attitude and fire Greek crowds bring that are incredibly impressive! You just wont find that passion and fire anywhere else in the world! To actually bring our own Riot-verse to Greece would be unforgettable and i think Cyprus would be a must stop for me!

Orion-Bass: A lot of serious metal has come from Greece no doubt! Bands like Septicflesh and Firewind definitely were some early pioneers exploring the darker theatrical side of metal! We definitely have those bands among others to thank for paving the way for bands like Nova Riot! And from what I’ve heard Greek metal heads are unmatched when it comes to energy intense loyalty and they know how to get loud! To be honest i didn’t even know that a tour through Greece was even an option haha! That would be a bucket list experience for sure! The history, culture, food and people would be a magical experience. Such a beautiful and special region of the world truly. Athens would be an obvious place to head to!

Ares- Lead Guitar: The music culture is something that I don’t have a real background on. Assuming like a vast majority of metal all over the world. There is usually a basic formula with the regions musical influences dropped in to give it its roots of origins. Metal Fans are all awesome all over the world. Greece should be no different. As for the culture and regions i want to experience, places like Santorini. Places that connect oceans to the mountains. Greece must be a magical place!
