FM – 40 Years of ”Indiscreet”– April 18 at Kyttaro Club!

FM are a British rock band formed in London in 1984 by vocalist Steve Overland, guitarist Chris Overland, bassist Merv Goldsworthy, and drummer Pete Jupp. They became particularly well known in the late 1980s for their distinctive AOR / melodic rock sound, combining catchy melodies, powerful choruses, and energetic guitar riffs.

Their debut album Indiscreet (1986) is now considered a classic in the melodic rock scene, followed by major releases such as Tough It Out (1989), Takin’ It to the Streets (1991), Aphrodisiac (1992), and many more, up to their recent album Brotherhood (2025)!

After a period of inactivity, FM reunited strongly in 2007 and continue to this day with a steady recording output and intense touring activity, maintaining a loyal fan base all over the world.

In Greece, their sold-out concert in November 2024 remains unforgettable. About 18 months later, they are returning once again to our country to perform live the songs from Indiscreet, along with all their classic hits from their subsequent albums, and of course their new songs from Brotherhood!
So, on Saturday, April 18, FM with Merv Goldsworthy – bass, Jim Kirkpatrick – guitar, Steve Overland – vocals & guitar, Pete Jupp – drums and Jem Davis- keybords, return to Athens, at Kyttaro Club, 48 Ipirou & Acharnon Street!

INTERVIEW WITH … Merv Goldsworthy!

Athenscalling.gr: Hi Merv, we would like to start our conversation by saying that we absolutely love FM and welcome you to Athenscalling.gr.
Merv Goldsworthy: Hi Theodore, thank you. We absolutely love coming over to play in Athens.

Athenscalling.gr: The early FM albums are now considered classics and are played everywhere, but there are also many other albums of yours that both fans and the music press talk less about. What is your response to that?
Merv Goldsworthy: FM fans come on board at different parts of the journey, some were there at the very start. So you have to understand as a songwriter, albums mean different things to different people, they all have their own individual soundtrack of their life, we are just happy to be part of it.

Athenscalling.gr: What do you think is the biggest difference between the music industry of the 1980s and today, and what matters most when it comes to promoting a musical creation?
Merv Goldsworthy: In the 80s, there was no mobile pnones, no social media, also computer games were very poor. So music meant more to a kid growing up. That is not so today. Although the internet is a great tool for getting information to the masses, you have the flip side which is streaming, something I feel is slowly killing the music industry.

Athenscalling.gr: Among all your songs, is there one that you personally consider the most representative of the band’s sound, and why?
Merv Goldsworthy:That Girl, it was the first song we ever played. The sound of the band was created right there.

Athenscalling.gr: What inspires you the most, from the past to the present, as a musician and bassist, after so many years of career?
Merv Goldsworthy: Phil Lynott, my inspiration as a bass player. John Sykes, my first partner in crime, in my first band, amazing talent.

Athenscalling.gr: Traveling back in time, do you remember the first album you ever bought and what it meant to you at that moment?
Merv Goldsworthy: Rolling Stones – High Tide and Green Grass, loved the songs, still great today.

Athenscalling.gr: Continuing our journey and heading south, arriving in Greece, what impresses you most about our country – the audience, the food, the history, the atmosphere, or our music?
Merv Goldsworthy: The fans, shows in Greece are very special, the atmosphere is like nowhere else. It’s a wonderful city but for me it’s all about the fans, they’re fantastic.

Athenscalling.gr: After so many years of touring around the world, what is it that still makes the live performance experience so magical for you?
Merv Goldsworthy: It’s the fan reaction to the songs, when you see someone singing the songs word perfect in another language from another country, that’s mindblowing.

Athenscalling.gr: Before we say goodbye and thank you for everything you’ve shared with us, we would like you to send your own message to Planet Earth, in a time when so many things are happening!
Merv Goldsworthy: Stay safe, be happy, keep rocking.
