Thundermother … Hard Rock from Sweden!

THUNDERMOTHER…

Thundermother is a Swedish hard rock band formed in 2009 by guitar virtuoso Filippa Nässil in Växjö, Sweden.

From the very beginning, Filippa had a vision to create a pure rock ’n’ roll band inspired by the raw sound and energy of groups like AC/DC, Airbourne, and Motörhead.
After moving to Stockholm, Filippa began forming the first stable lineup of the band, which quickly became known for relentless touring and explosive live performances.

Thundermother’s sound is a dynamic blend of classic hard rock and high-energy rock ’n’ roll. The guitars are heavy and groovy, the drums solid, and the vocals full of power.
This is a band that brings the rock of yesterday into the modern age, with a unique yet authentic, raw energy!

DISCOGRAPHY…

Thundermother has shown a steady upward discographic path with seven explosive albums:

2014 – Rock N Roll Disaster

2015 – Road Fever

2018 – Thundermother

2020 – Heat Wave

2021 – Heat Wave (Deluxe Edition)

2022 – Black and Gold

2025 – Dirty and Divine

LINEUP CHANGES…

Thundermother is a band that has undergone significant lineup changes throughout its existence. The most striking change occurred in 2017, when all members—except Filippa—left, leading to a complete rebuilding of the band.

In 2023, another major reboot took place, giving the band renewed freshness, strength, and new direction in their sound. The lineup now consists of:
Filippa Nässil – guitar (founder), Linnéa Vikström – vocals, Majsan Lindberg – bass, and Joan Massing – drums.

IN CONCLUSION…
Thundermother is now one of the most dynamic and authentic hard rock bands in Europe. With unstoppable energy, uncompromising rock aesthetics, and a steady discography, they continue to win new fans and keep the spirit of classic rock alive.

INTERVIEW… Filippa Nässil!

Athenscalling.gr: With a warm welcome, we’d like to express our admiration for the energy your band brings to your live shows — and even when we listen to your songs on vinyl! Your name is also impressive… Thundermother. Who came up with it, and what was the inspiration behind it?

Filippa Nässil (Thundermother): Thank you so much! About the name — it was 2009. When Moa and I founded the band, we were sitting, drinking some beers, and we thought of it. It actually happened very quickly.

Athenscalling.gr: Great, that’s the name… and regarding the music you create, how would you describe it? Would you place it in a specific genre?

Filippa Nässil (Thundermother): Absolutely — I wanted people to immediately hear that it’s classic rock à la AC/DC, and then the word “Thunder” came to me. After I said “Thunder,” Moa said “Mother,” and that was it.

Athenscalling.gr: So, a band with four women—and if we may… four very, very charming ladies—does this perhaps help the band become even more loved by the audience?

Filippa Nässil (Thundermother): I hope so — it’s nice to hear that we girls rock harder than most men. It’s more common to see all the older men doing rock. For me, it’s important to show that girls can do it too.

Athenscalling.gr: You have an excellent and explosive presence in your live shows… does this energy carry into the studio or even into rehearsals?

Filippa Nässil (Thundermother): We put our hearts into the music in the studio — maybe not as many headbanging moments.

Athenscalling.gr: All four members of the band — we must say — are wonderful… and you, of course, have been part of it for 16 whole years, if we’re not mistaken, leading it! How easy or difficult is that?

Filippa Nässil (Thundermother): It’s hard, and the first year was definitely the hardest. But now, towards the end, it has never been easier — everyone has accepted that I’m the ‘motherly’ type, and there are no disagreements. We just have fun, and it’s great.
But I think a band isn’t only about good times… how should I say — it’s not Rock ’n’ Roll all the time. There’s hard work behind everything, and I’m very proud of what I’ve achieved. And the team we have now is the best I’ve ever had in the band.

Athenscalling.gr: Throughout the course of Thundermother, there have been lineup changes. Did all these changes affect the band?

Filippa Nässil (Thundermother): I’ve always been the driving force of the band, so they affected me psychologically, but not the music, I’d say.

Athenscalling.gr: Now, let’s travel back in time and imagine little Filippa in a store buying her first vinyl or CD. Do you remember it?

Filippa Nässil (Thundermother): Yes, I bought Rage Against the Machine — the one with the monk burning on the cover. I had saved money and took the bus. I wasn’t disappointed. It was fantastic and is still a fantastic album.

Athenscalling.gr: Back to today… something that’s been spinning on your turntable recently?
Filippa Nässil (Thundermother): I just discovered a new band from England that I love — The Karma Effect.

Athenscalling.gr: It’s 2025, and three years after Black and Gold, your new album Dirty and Divine is released. Honestly, how were the songs of this album born, both lyrically and musically?

Filippa Nässil (Thundermother): Linnéa and I wrote many songs together. Some I wrote with friends I admire. Some songs I’ve had since the early Thundermother days, but they fit better now.

Athenscalling.gr: Was there any specific trigger or source of inspiration for the songs on the album, or does each one have its own story? Maybe an example?

Filippa Nässil (Thundermother): Yes, each song was created individually without the idea that they should follow a common thread… just good songs from beginning to end, in my opinion… haha!
For example, I sent a riff to Linnéa and she sent back lyrics and a melody that became Feeling Alright. It’s about feeling comfortable with your body as it is during sex — haha… I could never have imagined that when I wrote the riff.

Athenscalling.gr: And the album cover! Honestly, how sweet those little beings are. Amazing! Tell us how and why it was created.

Filippa Nässil (Thundermother): Thank you! Well, I had just had a baby before the album release, and the label suggested mini baby versions of all of us, which we thought was very funny. But we said the album has a lot of musical variety, so we also needed a devil on the cover — and for us to be angels.

Athenscalling.gr: Future plans — what can fans and not only expect from Thundermother in the coming months after the album? And what’s your message to those who love you… and to your future fans?

Filippa Nässil (Thundermother): We make music for everyone to enjoy, let’s rock and have fun together. Thank you for your support. We’ll be playing festivals in 2026 and many more tours in 2027 — we really hope you’ll come to one of our shows.

Athenscalling.gr: And finally, for our readers… dear Filippa, what do you know about Greece?
Filippa Nässil (Thundermother): Our former tour manager was from Greece. He taught us how to say… ‘Malaka’!
I also love your country. So much that I was supposed to get married there, but Covid canceled it!! But I still have the dress and who knows, maybe I’ll try again soon! I love you all!
